Abacus ESF International Kindergarten

abacus1‘Encouraging young minds to be big thinkers’

Nestled in the countryside of Clearwater Bay, lies Abacus Kindergarten, a lively pre-school where children are encouraged to explore, learn and play. Abacus has a natural and tranquil environment, mature tress provide shade over a large playground with climbing equipment, a large sand pit, trampoline and swing set.  Children have daily opportunities to run, climb and play or sit quietly in the patio area to share books and pretend play. The lawn area and lush gardens provide children with an opportunity to explore nature and participate in gardening and environmental activities.

The Kindergarten has four light classrooms equipped with a wealth of resources and the latest information technology learning tools. The kindergarten caters for children from a range of multicultural backgrounds aged from three to five (K1 and K2) in two sessions a day, five days a week. It is staffed by experienced and highly qualified early years practitioners who all hold degrees in Education. The programme is supported by educational assistants and class sizes are small in order to provide excellent adult to child ratios.

The language of instruction is English and children are encouraged to develop their communication skills by expressing their feelings, asking questions and explaining their ideas. In addition, the two Mandarin teachers deliver daily Chinese to the children and teach them about the festivals, traditions and culture of Hong Kong.

abacusAbacus is now an authorised IBO World school delivering the IBO Primary Years Program, this curriculum is also delivered in the ESF primary schools, including Clearwater Bay School, providing a natural progression from Kindergarten to school. The curriculum is a play-based, inquiry-led curriculum that encourages children’s natural curiosity and creativity. Children learn about a wide range of concepts and develop their skills through exploration and investigation.  The program includes opportunities for teacher led activities aimed at developing children’s thinking and problem solving skills. However, it also allows time and space for children to lead their own play activities and spend time making friends and communicating with others.

“We believe children’s education is very much a partnership with parents” says Frances Hurley, Principal of Abacus Kindergarten. “We actively encourage parents to be a part of their children’s learning by inviting them to be parent helpers. Parents are also welcomed into school to share special celebrations and to accompany us on school trips. Our active parent body even organise our Family Fun day every year, which is a great day out for all.

Most K2 children move on within the ESF system, usually to Clearwater Bay School or Renaissance College. As with other ESF kindergartens, Abacus’ students receive a high priority for an interview at ESF schools, although neither an interview nor a place can be guaranteed.

Our dedicated staff, enthusiastic parents and amazing children all contribute to making Abacus an exciting and nurturing environment. Children leave us confident, independent and ready for their next steps.

“We have had a truly wonderful experience at Abacus and are extremely grateful for how they have treated and educated our child. Thank you.” Final words from one of the Abacus Parents.
