Winter pools

Fancy a swim? Get your kicks at Hong Kong’s all-weather pools this winter.

With chilly Sai Kung public pool closed for winter, travel further afield to one of the 18 all-weather public pools across Hong Kong, which are heated until March. We’ve picked out the most convenient, but for opening times and a full list of heated pools see the Leisure and Cultural Services Department website (www.lcsd.gov.hk).

Tseung Kwan O Main Pool

Although this is an outdoor pool, the water is heated to balmy levels and a temporary covered tunnel from the changing room to poolside keeps the shivers at bay. Only the 10-lane main pool remains open. Closed Mondays. 9 Wan Lung Road, Tseung Kwan O, 2706 7646.

Hammer Hill Road Indoor Pools

The indoor recreation pool features a host of play equipment for children, including a pirate’s ship, playground, water guns, sea serpent slide, palm trees and rain trees. There’s also a more grown-up training pool for laps. Closed Mondays. 30 Lung Cheung Road, Wong Tai Sin, 2350 6173.

Sha Tin Jockey Club Main Pool

Of the four pools in the complex, only the 50-metre outdoor main pool is heated in winter, although you’ll have to brave the elements between the changing room and the water to get there. Closed Fridays. 10 Yuen Wo Road, Sha Tin, 2693 6613.

Hin Tin Indoor Pools

There’s a 50-metre indoor main pool for laps, but the big attraction here is the 100-square-metre heated indoor jacuzzi. Now that sounds fun. Closed Thursdays. 68 Che Kung Miu Road, Sha Tin, 2607 3423.

Kowloon Park Pool

The biggest public pool complex in town has a number of indoor facilities, including a 50-metre main pool, two training pools and a diving pool with seven springboards and four diving platforms. Closed Tuesdays. Kowloon Park, 22 Austin Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2724 3577, 2724 3344.

Hyatt Regency, Sha Tin

The beautiful outdoor pool at this five-star hotel is heated during winter, with bar service available poolside. A day pass is $400 per person, which includes access to the swimming pool, whirlpool, fitness center, steam room and sauna. There are also three- and sixth-month and annual memberships, with a host of extras and discounts. The pool closes for 10 days a year for maintenance, usually in February. 18 Chak Cheung Street, Sha Tin, 3723 1234.

Beaches

Half-human, half-iceberg types take to the waves year-round. If you like to brave the chill, head to one of the eight beaches with lifeguard services this winter — closest to home are Clear Water Bay Second Beach and Silverstrand Beach.

  1. Hi I have a suggestion for a january article. This year I wanted to give up smoking and was lucky to be recommended to a lady who uses hypnotherapy. I was very skeptical but after an hour with her in June I have never smoked again. Since then I returned to address a nail biting habit that I had since age 4 and now have control over that habit. Dr Melanie Bryan is a long term HK resident, fascinating lady and clinical psychologist. She deals with addictions, habits and behaviour issues through hypnotherapy. I know several people who have given up smoking without and lapsing and no stresss so I thought it might be an interesting article for people making new years resolutions . Id be happy to introduce you if you think it would be interesting
